Description
This roadrunner is looking pretty self-satisfied. He must have fooled the coyote again. Crazy but true, there is actually a debate as to whether the roadrunner of cartoon fame said ‘beep beep’ or ‘meep meep’ or even "hmeep hmeep" or "mweep, mweep". Regardless, I was excited to see my very first roadrunner and too excited to hear what it was he said! The roadrunner is known for its zygodactyl feet, meaning it has two toes pointing forward and two toes pointing backward. When viewing the tracks it is difficult to determine which direction the bird is going. Native Americans considered this bird to be very spiritual and placed its tracks around the house of a deceased person. This was supposed to confuse the evil spirits as to which direction the spirit of the dead had taken. Roadrunners can’t fly very well, but can run fast, up to 20 mph and perhaps as fast as 27 mph. They also have been known to kill a rattlesnake. Sheer speed and hunting prowess enables the roadrunner to encircle the snake, like a matador, and leap like a kangaroo over top or it until finally catching the exhausted snake by its head and throwing it into the sky. This intrepid bird will continue to bash the rattlesnake on the ground, rocks, or sticks for at least 15 minutes until its prey is lifeless. No wonder the cartoon coyete was so unsuccessful in outsmarting his foe.

I can't see the word "Roadrunner" without thinking of the great song of the same name by Jonathan Richman and The Modern Lovers.
